This was an email sent out by Debbie on May 28th, 4 days before their trip.
It has been over 16 months since Michael's (Vinny's) accident, yet the journey is just about to begin! On Monday, June 1st, we head to one of several airports on our journey to Qingdao, China. Over the course of the 5 weeks we'll be there, Michael will receive 7 treatments in a quest to restore his vision: "Michael Vincent's Fight for Sight." We go on this journey with positive attitudes, having faith and knowing we have the support and prayers of so many.
I have tried to get Michael's story out to the media, to no avail. People need to know that there's hope, and they shouldn't accept "no" for an answer. My prayers were answered when I took Michael to Cincinnati this past weekend, for a BMX contest. A girl introduced herself to me, saying she admires me for doing all I can to help Michael. She asked me if I thought about doing a documentary. She believes the story needs to be told/heard. She has offered to produce the Michael J. Vincent documentary, even loaning me her new video camera. So, it's official. I will document the journey to China, and the treatment process. Afterwards, she and her crew will edit and tweak it. By sharing Michael's story, perhaps we can help other families in similar situations. It's exciting!
Our trip to Cincinnati was great. Michael got to visit with many friends. ASA World Tour hosted the event and treated Michael like a celebrity. They had 4 complete bmx bikes donated, thanks to Hoffman Bikes and Eastern Bikes, which they raffled on Saturday and Sunday. They raised approximately $2800.00 towards Michael's treatments in China. ASA did a web interview with Michael, and Fuel TV had the ASA event announcer interview me (it will air in a couple weeks). All the driving, and the heat and humidity, was all worth it. Michael had a great time! It was a great send-off before the trip to China!
My mother's church held a bake sale and "love offering", raising $1300.00 to benefit Michael. They have been extremely supportive throughout his ordeal. They also know how very special he is to his "Gram".
With the two recent fundraisers, we have now raised 50% of the funds needed. We are so thankful to all who have helped. We are thankful for all the support and prayers, and ask that you continue to keep us in your prayers. Michael's wish for a miracle could actually become reality!
I plan to send email updates from China. The hospital also provides us with a blog, which I'll share with you. If any of you have the opportunity to call Michael before we leave, please do so. He loves to talk to friends! We'll return home late July 7th.
Again, I cannot thank you enough for your continued support, prayers and positive thoughts.
God Bless each of you,
Debbie
