Skateboards for Cuba

One of the most inspiring stories I've seen from the skateboard communities in a long time. New Jersey's Chris Nieratko and a huge crew of Pro skaters, photographers, videographers and industry people traveled to Cuba on the down low to bring hundreds of skateboards to the kids of Cuba. Simply great.

From VBS.tv:

Chris Nieratko and 15 skaters sneak into Havana, Cuba with the sole intention of bringing skateboards to the children of the forbidden island. They basically barged… Continue

Oregon's Annual Trifecta Goes Bifecta

The Oregon Trifecta, part of World Cup Skateboarding's Bowl series, has become one of the most anticipated concrete contests of the year. Three parks, three days, three contests. Well, that's the idea anyway.

Due to some paperwork mishaps in regards to the Lincoln City stop (which was to be the first stop of 2009) the Trifecta was relegated to a Bifecta. But that didn't stop the fun. Tigard and Pier Park are two of Oregon's best skateparks,… Continue

A Method to the Madness

I always thought the way different people learn their tricks and develop their style is interesting. Rodney Mullen is by far one of my favorite people to watch on a skateboard. Rodney's an incredibly intelligent guy, studying incredibly complex math equations in his spare time and reading about formulas. So I guess I shouldn't have been suprised at this video of his approach to learning darkslides for the first time on a ledge. Personally, It never would have occurred to me to use this method… Continue

Action Sports Breeds the New Business Man?

Are we the new business man? Entreprenuer Magazine thinks so. It's no secret that business has changed. While big businesses and chain stores are flailing and blaming the economy for their failure to keep up with the new, small, credible lifestyle based brands and shops are bustling. Recent generations haven't been molded into the lifestyle patterns previous generations have tried to instill for the last two decades. Instead they've bread a new world A new consumer. A new business… Continue

Spring Done Sprung!

Spring is here... almost. To celebrate I helped some friends at Portland's "Dude Ranch" throw up a small mini ramp in their backyard. The day turned from ramp building Saturday to full-on weekend skateboard BBQ in a short time. It doesn't take long for the word of a new ramp to spread, or for the sound of trucks on coping to lure in more of the skateboarding kind.

While it was a small ramp by most standards, getting it done was a true sign that… Continue

Tony Hawk's Twitter Scavenger Hunt

Everyone is using Twitter. Everyone. At first it seems absurd, but once you start following things your interested in it can and will completely change the way you use the internet. It has nearly replaced RSS readers for me, reduced the amount of time I spend going to actual web sites, and drastically reduced the number of emails and text messages I send. What's more, is I've gotten actual paying work out… Continue

Tampa Pro Preview

The 13th annual Tampa Pro is going down this weekend, and if you're anywhere within driving distance you darn well better be there (and by driving distance we mean continental US). Tampa Pro has evolved into the most respected skateboard contest each year, and its home, the Skatepark of Tampa has put Tampa on the world map for skateboarding. No contest is more anticipated by skateboarders each year. The friendly skatepark environment and good times make Tampa Pro a must attend… Continue

Garage Ramp Season

Billy, Back Smith

All most through it... the hardest time of the year: Garage Ramp Season. Most of the country is prone to it (damn you South) and we have to do our darndest to get sessions in around the rain and the snow. Free outdoor skateparks have popped up around the country, which is awesome, but it hasn't done much for the private, fee-based indoor skateparks. After all, why pay for something you can get for… Continue

Mike Mo takes the Battle at the Berrics and 10k

This weekend was the finals of the much anticipated "Battle at the Berrics," Eric Koston and Steve Berras private facility of fun in Los Angeles. The Battle was a glorified game of "S-K-A-T-E" where some of the best in the biz went head to head through various rounds. Good stuff.

The videos from the various heats as well as the finals are up on The Berrics today... check it out to see how Mike Mo beat out Benny Fairfax and Billy Marks to take home a $10,000 check. Good stuff over… Continue

Crailtap Interview with Girl Skateboards co-founder Spike Jonze

Spike Jonze is often heralded as one of the greatest living film directors. Works like Being John Malkovich and Adaptation have brought Spike critical acclaim in Hollywood. What you may not know, is that Spike is the co-founder of Girl Skateboards. His roots are in BMX (he was the main photographer on Freestylin' magazine in the late 80s) and skateboarding (he directed Blind's Video Days, and more recently co-produced Fully-Flared with Ty Evans) and he continues to… Continue

Interview Magazine with Supreme's James Jebbia

I just came across this interview on Interview Magazine's site with James Jebbia, who in 1994, started a skate shop which has evolved into one of todays most iconic streetwear brands: Supreme. With Skateboard decks featuring art from Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst, Supreme is no ordinary skate brand.

"When people think of skaters, they think of, like, the 12- or 13- or 14-year-old kid. But in New York, it was the 18-to-24-year-old hardcore kid who wasn’t wearing any skate stuff. They’d… Continue

Skate City USA

If it isn't already, Portland, Oregon is on its way to becoming America's official skate city. That's a good part of the reason I, and many other people have moved here. Any city with a "master skatepark plan" written into city ordinance is fine by me.

Passed by city council ordinance on August 3, 2005, the plan recommends 3 types of skateparks — 19 in total — 13 neighborhood skate spots, 5 district-wide skateparks, and one central city anchor park. Portland is well on it's way to… Continue

Rodney Mullen Interview at Transworld

Transworld Skateboarding have an excellent Rodney Mullen Feature up at the moment by Sean Mortimer, in which Rodney talks about his upbringing in Florida.

"California represented absolute freedom for me. I had very limited exposure to a lot of things because of how I grew up. [Rodney's dad was extremely strict.] Moving out to California wasn’t a goal—it was a dream. I was so stoked to come to California for contests that when I was there, I’d tape the radio station KROQ. When I… Continue

Grant Brittain Limited Edition Pro Model

Grant Brittain has inspired everyone in action sports photography, whether directly or indirectly. He's mentored today's best like Atiba Jefferson, and his images are some of the most powerful of all-time.

Club Mumble along with Powell Peralta and the Skateboard Mag are giving three honorary Pro Models this year, and the first has gone to Grant Britain, the "oldest skateboard photographer."

Really there is no one more fitting that I can think of, and having never had a pro… Continue

What to Look for in a Board

Being an (older) skater, I am always checking out the latest gear and updating (now that I have a job and money!) Of course, safety is an issue, so I want a board that is well built, but looks good too. I have a Darkstar skateboard right now (third in the last two…See More
