When I moved to Southern California in the 90s, it was still
THE place to be if you were in or wanted to be in the Skate or BMX industries. The internet's evolution changed all that, and soon enough, the industries were as spread out as the base of participants. Now a rider or skater can live anywhere and get noticed. Popular brands can be found in places like New Jersey, Upstate New York, Ohio, and in many of the European Nations. Since I don't surf, I got out when I…

For the last few months, businesses involved in products produced for children have been in a total panic. February 10th, which has become known as National Bankruptcy Day, is the day in which all products the CPSIA deems to be directed at children are subject to new lead and phthalate regulations.
20-inch bicycles fall under a toy designation, so the industry is in a panic. Small teddy bear manufacturers producing products in a…

I'm snowed in today. Literally.
There is over a foot of snow here in Portland, which is something that really just doesn't happen. A dusting is something we'll occasionally see, but nothing like this. The city is a mess, and not at all equipped to deal with snow like this. Nothing is plowed or sanded. As a New Englander, I'm used to lots of snow, and typically a foot wouldn't shut much down, but Portland isn't ready.
Somehow today I ended up on the WikiAnswers site. Then I…

I just uploaded a little video from this past weekend in Portland. There was a very uncharacteristic snowstorm in downtown Portland, so I got a call from my friends that do the online snowboard zine YoBeat to go out on an urban snowboard session. This the was the perfect opportunity to test out the HD video on the Nikon D90 DSLR, which, until now I've only really played with in somewhat ideal or controlled lighting situations. A snowy, hazy day, where the snow is blowing everywhere (and it's…

Earlier in the year had a debate with some business types in which I was arguing the influence of Tony Hawk on young consumers relative to "traditional athletes." They didn't listen.
Well, Forbes confirms what I was saying in their list of the top ten most influential athletes, ranking Hawk #3. Unfortunately for skateboarding, this will mean more out of touch advertising agencies trying to capitalize on the dedication of a culture they once mocked.…

The 2009 Woodward Catalogs showed up at my office today (we designed all four books this year — five if you count the cover that swaps out) from the printer... the hundreds of thousands of wee lads on the mailing list should be receiving them just before Christmas. In time to get mommy and daddy to stimulate the economy and send them to CA or PA for a week!!! If you're a gymnast, a skateboarder, a BMX rider, or now even a snowboarder, Woodward…

Corey Bohan never ceases to amaze me. Not only is he without question one of the top five bike riders on the planet, he is now on Star Magazine's radar. Unfortunately it's in regards to his recent breakup with Audrina from "The HIlls," but who would have thunk it? I mean, Mirra, Hawk or Sheckler would be Tabloid material, but Corey? Wowsers.
"In the midst of Audrina Patridge's boy troubles with Justin "Bobby" Brescia, The Hills star found herself "a keeper" in BMX rider Corey Bohan —…

A while back Adidas announced it would not be having 2008 and 2009 holiday parties for employees.
Skate shoe company Etnies feels the pain of the employees who would have otherwise gone without free booze this holiday season, so they are throwing a party for those in need — also known as those who work for adidas.
Since My Father's Place is walking distance from the Souney Media office, I will certainly be watching the…

The Berrics posted an (as usual) amazing video of what a Thanksgiving Feast is like at its compound. Check it out
now.
Also while you're on the Berrics, read Steve Berra's "Unit Directive" on the $5 Billion a year industry we call skateboarding, and the agencies call profitable.
Read that… Continue

If you can look past the horrible starburst effects at the start, Monster have posted up a nice little video with Jamie Bestwick, where he talks about the '08 contest season, plans to race his motorcycle this winter, and plans to attend some of the winter snow events with the Monster team — Bestwick hanging with the Dingo? Could be trouble. You'll also get a quick glimpse inside Jamie's new home in State College (and it aint an Amish farmhouse).
Check out the video…
