Spike Jonze is often heralded as one of the greatest living film directors. Works like
Being John Malkovich and
Adaptation have brought Spike critical acclaim in Hollywood. What you may not know, is that Spike is the co-founder of Girl Skateboards. His roots are in BMX (he was the main photographer on
Freestylin' magazine in the late 80s) and skateboarding (he directed Blind's Video Days, and more recently co-produced
Fully-Flared with Ty Evans) and he continues to…

I just came across this interview on Interview Magazine's site with James Jebbia, who in 1994, started a skate shop which has evolved into one of todays most iconic streetwear brands: Supreme. With Skateboard decks featuring art from Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst, Supreme is no ordinary skate brand.
"When people think of skaters, they think of, like, the 12- or 13- or 14-year-old kid. But in New York, it was the 18-to-24-year-old hardcore kid who wasn’t wearing any skate stuff. They’d…

The last few years have been a huge reality check for all of us involved in action sports. BMX rider Stephen Murray's career ending injury two years ago, and more recently FMX rider Jeremy Lusk's fatal crash bring the true danger of what we do every day.
2008 started out an amazing year for influential BMX rider Mike Aitken. A new son, a win in front of a hometown crowd at the Dew Tour in Salt Lake City (Aitken was given a wild-card for that event and went on to win), and an invite…

Real Estate Developer John Parker, no-footed invert.
About a year ago I moved to Portland, OR from Central Pennsylvania, where I spent four years of my life for one reason: Woodward Camp. As a photographer shooting BMX, it doesn't get much better than having some of the best riders in the world around every day.
After four years in State College, the nearby city where myself, and most of the riders lived, I decided I…

Forbes magazine recently listed its ten highest paid Action Sports Athletes. There are several notably missing from the list, though I wouldn't expect it to be accurate.

If it isn't already, Portland, Oregon is on its way to becoming America's official skate city. That's a good part of the reason I, and many other people have moved here. Any city with a "master skatepark plan" written into city ordinance is fine by me.
Passed by city council ordinance on August 3, 2005, the plan recommends 3 types of skateparks — 19 in total — 13 neighborhood skate spots, 5 district-wide skateparks, and one central city anchor park. Portland is well on it's way to…

Web videos are changing everything. 25 years ago, new tricks would happen in Southern California, and then 3 months later the rest of the world would catch on to them via print magazines like BMX Action or Freestylin.' This lag kept progression to a slow, easy to catch on to pace, that "the rest of us" could follow.
In the last couple years the internet has boosted the rate of progression in BMX (and everything else for that matter) infinitely. New tricks are fired out, and they're…

Transworld Skateboarding have an excellent Rodney Mullen Feature up at the moment by Sean Mortimer, in which Rodney talks about his upbringing in Florida.
"California represented absolute freedom for me. I had very limited exposure to a lot of things because of how I grew up. [Rodney's dad was extremely strict.] Moving out to California wasn’t a goal—it was a dream. I was so stoked to come to California for contests that when I was there, I’d tape the radio station KROQ. When I…

This 360 transfer was enormous. Bruce did it twice... flawlessly. Photo: Souney
I've heard kids joke to each other that "That guy won the X Games." A lot of times a stranger will have an interest in the crazy BMX action they're witnessing, try to get more insight, and the riders mock them with statements like "he won the X Games."
I guess it's a fun joke.
The other day, while shooting photos of Bruce Crisman, a…
