Thursday April 29th, McKinley High

So we hit paydirt today. It's a clear sunny day, decent temps, and not those crazy 30 MPH wind gusts. Things are looking on the up and up today. Our show this afternoon is pretty close to downtown, at a school called McKinley High School. It's right down the street from a museum, and a really cool park. As we pulled up to the parking lot, we could tell this wasn't your run of the mill high school.

First thing I noticed, was a bunch of students working together next to a building. As I… Continue

Wednesday April 28th, Sweet Home High

Middle of the week, and today's show is at Sweet Home High School. This school is appropriately named, because it was only 2 miles from the hotel, real close to home sweet home for us this week. After all of the driving we have been doing the last 2 weeks, it was refreshing to only have to spend 5 minutes in the car.

The short drive was the upside to the day, the downside was the wind. Remember those 30 MPH gusts I mentioned in yesterday's post? Well we had that, and then some. It was… Continue

Tuesday April 27th, Hamburg High

Woke up this morning to clear blue skies. It looked fantastic outside, a perfect spring day. Then I walked outside. It was chilly, and windy. Don't get me wrong, still a beautiful day, but it feels more like October this week, than it does late April.

Our travels today take us to a little suburb in southwest Buffalo, known as Hamburg. The ramp was setup today on the side of the school on a blacktop area. Perfect level setting for the show, the wind was the only thing hampering us… Continue

Mon April 26th, Attica High

What a long drive that was. Over 525 miles in a Chevy Tahoe with 7 people, equals a road trip similar to Chevy Chase and company, in the movie "Vacation". We may not have stopped to see the worlds second largest ball of twine, but we definitely made an adventure out of it. It poured down rain the entire drive through Ohio, Pennsylvania, and into New York. Once we arrived, everyone was more than ready to be out of the car. We took Sunday off, kicking back and trying some buffalo wings, but then… Continue

Friday April 23rd Rowan County High

Last day of the week, and again, it is raining. They had predicted this for days, and it was really coming down this morning. We thought we might have a chance of pulling off a ramp show, because the event site was over an hour away, but no such luck. After calling the ramp crew, we quickly learned that it was raining there, and after a quick check of the weather channel, it was pretty much raining all over the state.

We had another lengthy drive today, this one was 65 miles to east in… Continue

Thursday April 22nd Western Hills High

When we woke up this morning, it was dark and rainy outside. Definitely wasn't looking good for a ramp show outside. I called the ramp crew, and they said it was overcast, but not raining at the school, and it was still game on for our assembly show. I guess that is one of the advantages to having to drive long distances every day to shows, if it's raining at your hotel, chances are, the weather is totally different at the school.

Today's drive was 42 miles to the west, in Frankfort,… Continue

Wednesday April 21st, Montgomery High

Another beautiful sunny day in central Kentucky, and another day of driving. This time we head to the east about 45 miles to a town called Mount Sterling, for a show at Montgomery County High. When we exited the freeway, there was literally nothing around. It was just rolling hills of green grass, and an occasional farm. We drove around in this type of scenery for about 14 miles, before we finally saw some homes, and eventually the town of Mt Sterling. It was a cool looking place, it looked to… Continue

Tuesday April 20th Atherton High

When we last left you all in the blog world, it was in the sunny skies of Phoenix Arizona. The tour took a short break at the end of March. After Phoenix, the crew split up and headed up, and took 3 weeks off to regroup and recharge the ole road batteries. I figured 3 weeks at home in April would be great. Middle of spring, get some things done in the yard, etc. Boy was I wrong. Apparently, winter has decided to hang around a lot longer than normal in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Most of… Continue

Friday March 26th, Apollo High

Last day of the week, and the last day of this section of the tour. This time we head north up I-17 to Apollo High School. It was going to be a pretty quick day, as we had 2 shows, each 35 minutes in length, during the lunch periods.

When we arrived to the campus, the ramp truck was set up in a driveway, right next to the lunch area, with the Marines rig providing a nice backdrop for the whole site. They had 2 Hummers out there today, and yesterday was so busy, that they brought a 2nd… Continue

Thursday March 25th, La Joya Community High

Another late show today, and a single show day. We love these, because everyone gets a chance to sleep in, and with one show, everyone really pours it on with the riding. Our adventures today took us a bit west. We usually stay on the east side of town when in Phoenix, and La Joya Community High is way out west, past Glendale. It was a good 45 minute drive out I-10 west. I remember when this area was all fields and farmland. Ever since the new football stadium and hockey arena went up, this… Continue

Wednesday March 24th, Red Mountain High

Another warm sunny day here in Phoenix. It actually wasn't too bad today, it was almost perfect temperature. I guess it makes sense why a lot of baseball teams will come here for their spring training.

Today we are in Mesa, a suburb on the east side of Phoenix, at Red Mountain High School. They have a nice big campus, with a wide open paved area on the north side of the school, just inside the fence line. It was just wide enough to fit the ramp truck, and the Marines semi… Continue

Monday March 22nd, Cactus Shadows High

It was a quick weekend in Chicago for the ASA BMX Triples event, and now it's back to the grindstone and more high school tour shows. This week we are in the valley of the sun, Phoenix Arizona. We have some new additions to the lineup this week as well. Last week we said goodbye to Jay Stevason and John Parker. This week they have been replaced by Elliot Sloan (skateboard), and Koji Kraft (BMX). In addition to those guys, we still have Marc Englehart (inline), Gabe Weed (flatland), and Austin… Continue

Tuesday March 23rd, Raymond Kellis High

Something happened today, that none of us could have expected, it rained!!!!!! It hardly ever rains in Phoenix, and it was pouring today. I noticed it about 4 AM this morning. I thought the pool was leaking downstairs, but when I opened the door, I saw the pouring rain. It didn't stop either, it was doing this all morning until about 9:15 or so. We thought for sure that this meant today was a box jump show, but that was not the case.

When we arrived at Raymond Kellis high today, it… Continue

Friday March 19th, Polytechnic High

Last day of the week here in LA, and man was it another hot one. The temperature was pretty high early in the morning, and just seemed to get worse as the day went on. Don't get me wrong, I like warm weather, but this was just wrong for only being March.

Our last show this week, brings us to Polytechnic High School, in Sun Valley, just north of Burbank. Today was a quick one. It was a single show during the lunch period. We only had 35 minutes to get the performance in, so we had to… Continue

Thursday March 18th, Verdugo Hills High

Another warm sunny day, and this time, we didn't have to travel too far. Our show today was just up the road from the hotel, at Verdugo Hills High School. It was an interesting drive, through some windy roads, and past some cool houses. Actually, this entire week has been an adventure around parts of the Los Angeles area, that I wasn't very familiar with before. The scenery has been pretty good all week. Our setup location was on the backside of the campus, another level blacktop area, right… Continue

Wednesday March 17th, Clark Magnet High

Another extremely warm day in Los Angeles. I swear it was almost 90 today, I haven't checked out the weather to confirm that yet, but man was it ever hot. Not exactly early spring like weather, but it makes for a very warm St. Patty's Day. One thing was for certain, no earthquakes today. I actually was watching the news this morning, and the newscaster had to explain that the heatwave in the area, had nothing to do with yesterday's earthquake. Apparently there is a popular myth, that extreme… Continue

Tuesday March 16th, Chatsworth High

Had an early and interesting start to our day today. Most of us woke up around 4:30 or so this morning, to a rumbling hotel. It wasn't construction or the planes taking off from the Burbank airport across the street, instead it was an earthquake. I think they determined it was a 4.4, gave the hotel a good rattle. Some of us felt it and woke up from it, the other half of us slept right through it.

In addition to the earthquake, we had more summer like conditions today. It was well into… Continue

Monday March 15th, Manual Arts High

On Friday I ended my blog by saying , "wish me luck". As it turns out, I needed luck for that drive home on Friday. I hit massive traffic all the way out of the bay area, but when I arrived in Sacramento, I learned that I-80 over the mountains, was closed heading east, due to accidents in the snow. I had already spent 5 hours sitting in traffic to go 75 miles, and now I was stuck. That meant I had to call it a night, and stay in Sacramento again, boooooooooooo. The trip home was short lived,… Continue

Friday March 12th, Skyline High

I guess yesterday's weather report of guaranteed rain, was right on the money. It was dry when we woke up, but right around 10:30 or so, the clouds rolled in and it began to downpour. This was bad news for our show this afternoon. We finish out this week in Oakland, at Skyline High. This is another campus in the eastern hills, overlooking the city. Well, from what they tell me it overlooks the city. I couldn't tell, because it was surrounded in fog on the drive up, so I had to take the students… Continue

What to Look for in a Board
